The photographer as a child,
photo by her mother Barbara Drake.

I grew up in Michigan where it is very cold in the winter. Throughout my childhood my father repeated two bits of advice, "Get a project" and "Put something warmer on".

Eventually I learned to knit.

I also drew pictures in the ice on the inside windows of my bedroom, made dollhouse furniture out of found items and experimented in my mother's home darkroom.

As an adult I am still cursed and blessed with this lifestyle of never ending projects and ideas.
